There’s a dangerous assumption in IT: if the backup completed successfully, we’re protected.
Unfortunately, that isn’t necessarily true.
A successful backup tells you that data was copied. It doesn’t necessarily tell you that your business can recover.
Imagine it’s Monday morning. Your production environment has been hit by ransomware. Servers are encrypted, users can’t access applications and operations have stopped.
You check the backup system. Everything is green. Backups completed successfully over the weekend.
Great.
Now comes the important question: how quickly can you actually recover?
Which servers come back first? Where do they run? Are the backups accessible? Are they clean? Can your applications communicate? Are your domain controllers available? Can databases start? Do you have enough infrastructure to run the recovered workloads?
And perhaps most importantly: has anyone actually tested the process?
Backup is Not Recovery
A backup is a copy of your data. Disaster recovery is the ability to restore the business.
That means understanding your RPO—how much data you can afford to lose—and your RTO—how long you can afford to be down.
Then you need to determine whether your actual recovery process can achieve those objectives.
A DRaaS environment should be more than another location where backup files sit. It should provide a practical recovery path for critical workloads, including compute, storage, networking, application dependencies, security and recovery procedures.
Test the Plan
A DR strategy that has never been tested is really an assumption.
Run a recovery. Measure the actual recovery time. Validate applications. Confirm dependencies. Document what worked and what didn’t.
Then improve the process and test again.
The goal of disaster recovery isn’t to have a green dashboard.
The goal is to get the business back online.
The Question to Ask
Don’t ask only, “Did our backup complete?”
Ask, “If our production environment disappeared tomorrow, could we run the business somewhere else?”
That is a much better measure of resilience.
