If your organization is still running VMware, you’ve probably had the conversation: licensing costs have changed, your renewal is approaching, and someone has asked, “Should we just move off VMware?”
The problem is that “just migrate” isn’t really a plan.
For many organizations, VMware is deeply embedded in their infrastructure. There may be dozens—or hundreds—of virtual machines running critical applications, databases, file servers and business systems. Moving everything at once can introduce unnecessary risk.
But continuing to pay increasing licensing costs forever may not be the answer either.
There is another option: create a migration strategy instead of rushing into a migration.
Understand Your Options
Organizations considering a VMware exit generally have several paths: stay on VMware, move workloads to Hyper-V, evaluate Proxmox, move selected workloads to another cloud platform, or temporarily host VMware while developing a migration plan.
There isn’t one universally correct answer. The right decision depends on your applications, operational expertise, licensing costs, performance requirements, compliance requirements and long-term infrastructure strategy.
Don’t Confuse Urgency With Speed
A VMware renewal date creates urgency. It doesn’t necessarily create a reason to take unnecessary technical risks.
A better strategy can be to buy yourself time and migrate deliberately.
For example, a VMware environment can temporarily be hosted in a dedicated cloud infrastructure while the organization plans and executes its migration to another hypervisor.
That means you don’t necessarily have to choose between paying the renewal and completing the entire migration immediately.
Migrate Based On Business Priorities
Not every workload needs to be treated equally.
Start by identifying critical workloads, easy-to-migrate workloads, complex applications and legacy systems. Build migration waves around business impact rather than simply moving VMs because they are VMs.
A VMware migration isn’t just a hypervisor change. It can be an opportunity to rethink infrastructure, disaster recovery, backup and long-term costs.
The goal shouldn’t simply be “get off VMware.”The goal should be to build a better infrastructure strategy for the next several years.
VMware doesn’t have to be a dead end. If your renewal is approaching, you don’t need to panic. You need a plan.
That plan might involve Hyper-V, Proxmox, cloud infrastructure—or temporarily hosting VMware while you determine the best migration path.
The important thing is to make the decision based on your business, not your renewal deadline.
